Developmental Editing

Available For:

Fiction

Recommended For:

Early Drafts; New Writers

This is one of the most beneficial editing services you can ever invest in. When you engage in this experience, you and your editor take on a mentor/mentee relationship in order to refine the basic and most important elements of your story. If you are worried about how you are getting your ideas across or just want to ensure your story structure is sound before moving on to the more detailed processes of line-editing and proofreading, this is for you.

When you work with me on a developmental edit, I coach you on the following big-picture aspects:

  • Plot and structure. Does it make sense for the story you want to tell?

  • Pacing and flow. Are any scenes too fast or too slow? How well do they transition?

  • Language, character, dialogue and tone. Is it all consistent?

  • Recurring stylistic or technical mistakes. Make sure you are familiar with the fundamentals of story writing.

Proofreading

Available For:

Fiction; Non-Fiction; Business

Recommended For:

Manuscripts and articles that have been through at least one round of content editing; Business cards, leaflets and website content

Proofreading is an absolute must for any piece of writing that is to be published. Spelling and grammar errors can be as embarrassing as they are unprofessional.

It is rarely enough for an author to proofread their own piece, as our familiarly with our own words can cause us to skim over errors. Whether it’s a novel, a blog post or a pamphlet, allow me to cast my keen eye for detail over your work to pick out those pesky little mistakes that often fly under the radar.

This is what I look for when I go through with my figurative fine-toothed comb:

  • Spelling errors

  • Grammatical errors

  • Typing errors

  • Punctuation errors

  • Formatting errors

  • Homophones

  • Consistency in style

  • Links / headings / subheadings / captions / other supplementary text

  • Language and tone
